Can Students Work?

ITU is a Day 1 CPT university, and ITU Certificate Students can immediately acquire employment in the US during the length of their certificate program, so they can obtain practical training, experience and self-generate income while attending school.

Process

Once a student is granted J1 visa status, ITU students have authorization to legally work in the US, for the duration of the certificate program(s), not to exceed 18 months.

During that time, if the student finds an industry internship and so desires, the student can apply, and if accepted, transfer their J1 from Certificate to Doctorate status (PhD or DBA Degrees).

J1 Visa - change of status for PhD / DBA degrees

Certificate units already earned by the student will automatically be applied to ITU’s doctorate programs seamlessly once the student is accepted. Once the Change of Status is executed from certificate J1 to doctoral J1, the student can officially work in the US for 36 months uninterrupted, up to the duration of the doctoral degree program (typically 3-7 years).

Requirement

Student applies to the ITU doctoral program of choice with all necessary documentation. If accepted, ITU International Student Office (ISO) executes the J1 Change of Status.

J2 Visa - issued for the SPOUSE

Once the J1 is issued to the student for the doctoral program of choice, a J2 visa can also be issued to the student’s spouse. The J2 visa allows the spouse to also work legally in the US for a period of 36 months uninterrupted, up to the duration of the doctoral program.
